Selous National Park
Southern Tanzania Safari

Selous (Nyerere) National Park

Africa's largest national park, famous for boat safaris, huge elephant populations, wild dogs and untouched wilderness far away from the crowds.

About Selous

Wild. Remote. Authentic.

Officially known as Nyerere National Park, Selous is Africa's largest national park and remains one of Tanzania's most exclusive safari destinations. It is approximately four times larger than Serengeti while receiving only a fraction of the visitors.

The park is famous for the Rufiji River, where visitors can enjoy unique boat safaris alongside traditional game drives and guided walking safaris led by armed rangers.

Travel Information

Good To Know

Official Name

The reserve is officially known as Nyerere National Park but many travelers still refer to it as Selous Game Reserve. Using both names helps visitors easily identify the destination.

Best Time To Visit

The dry season from June to October offers the best wildlife viewing as animals gather around the Rufiji River and other permanent water sources.

Easy Access

Reach the park by a 5–6 hour road transfer from Dar es Salaam or a short domestic flight from Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar or Arusha.

Less Crowded

Unlike the Northern Circuit, Nyerere offers a quieter safari with fewer vehicles, making it ideal for travelers seeking privacy and an authentic wilderness experience.

Extend Your Holiday

Combine Selous With Zanzibar

Nyerere National Park is one of the easiest safaris to combine with Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam. Spend a few days exploring the African wilderness before relaxing on the white sandy beaches of Zanzibar.
