One of the highlights of Prison Island is the sanctuary of Aldabra Giant Tortoises. These incredible animals were gifted to Zanzibar over a century ago and have become one of the island's greatest treasures.
Some tortoises are believed to be more than 150 years old. Visitors can observe, photograph and even feed them while learning about their conservation.
Despite its famous name, Prison Island never became a functioning prison. The buildings were later used as a quarantine station for people arriving from East Africa during outbreaks of infectious diseases.
Today these historic structures remain as reminders of Zanzibar's colonial history while the island itself has transformed into one of the country's most visited attractions.
